Rehearsal Tape #1: "Long Overdue" Deconstructed

Jason and I jammed this out last week, completely spontaneously, and we were both surprised by where it went. I considered editing it way down (it runs about 13 minutes), but since it’s really an exploration of process, decided against cutting it up. So here it is in its entirety.

(Please use the link above - I’m hosting the song on Bandcamp, because it’s actually too large an MP3 for Tumblr to host itself.)

All sounds were made by either guitar or drums (with a little bit of singing in there too). We were experimenting with some new effects on guitar, and also with some echo on the drums (you can hear that a bit during the singing at the start, but then more again around the 7-minute mark).

My favorite part is when it kicks into high gear at 8:45. What follows is proof that I’ve been listening to too much (or maybe just the right amount) of Daniel Lanois doing his live guitar psych freakout thing. Not saying I’m at his level, just, it’s clearly rubbed off a bit…

Blah blah, enough talk, just put it on while you work or something, and even though it’s long, it seems to fly by.
